Some of us might pass by LA Job Corps every day on Olive between 11th and Olympic without knowing much or interacting with the campus. But many of the students live on campus and are part of our community.

The South Park Neighborhood Association (SPNA) is thrilled to present the 6th Annual A Taste of South Park, happening on Saturday afternoon, September 27, 2025, in the AEG parking lot on the northwest corner of Grand Ave. and 11th St. 

We’re excited to share a fun idea that could bring our community together under the stars: a Summer Outdoor Movie Night Series!

Living in one of the greatest cities in the world means that you will inevitably have visitors from out of town. We love them, but people who aren’t local to Los Angeles don’t know the first thing about planning a fun day here.

If you feel like a quick trip to another world far, far from DTLA and its recent unpleasantness, you can do no better than visiting Russ and Katie and the Banning House Lodge, in remote Two Harbors, Catalina Island.

SPNA’s Shared Camera Network Committee has been meeting with local businesses, HOAs, and private security firms to elicit support to participate in a pilot security program. The effort has resulted in strong support.

As mentioned in Part 1 of the neighborhood shared security initiative,  we are collecting data on crimes and nuisance issues in our neighborhood. We will collect data during the pilot phase as well, and then we can assess if the shared security initiative is an asset for the neighborhood.

Police drones are in our future in downtown according to a presentation by LAPD officer Thomas Andreas to the Central Area Community Police Advisory Board on May 25 at the Central Station. Four South Park residents were in attendance.

Why should you be interested in LA city’s interest in an ordinance to prohibit citywide new oil and gas extraction AND the phasing out of existing operations?  Because we have an oil well site in South Park – between Hill and Broadway and Pico and 14th Place.

The COVID epidemic of recent years did not do any favors for the downtown residential market.  With the city being largely cleared out by the necessity of remote work, residential and commercial real estate found itself in an unwelcome slumber.  During this period, it was hard to stay optimistic about occupancy growth in the city’s future.

South Park residents answered the call in last month’s newsletter to put Oceanwide back on everyone’s agenda by acting on a resolution. Eight neighbors with experience in law, development, business, and communication met to begin the work.

Javier’s brings a 30-year heritage of fine Mexican dining to the neighborhood with their sixth restaurant located on 12th Street between Figueroa and Flower in the Circa Apartment Complex.

A clean cave-like entrance pulls you into the restaurant. The inside is reminiscent of the kind of beautiful, elegant restaurants found throughout Mexico City's trendy neighborhoods with large tables and cream-colored booths surrounded by plants and an elegant bar. Javier's is a high-end cantina that opened mid-May on12th Street between Flower and Figeroa.

South Park has a fascinating new business unlike any you’ve ever seen locally.  Fiesta Michoacana, directly across from Luma Condominiums on Hope Street, offers an eclectic mix of just about anything and everything you have ever craved to eat!  Their motto: “The Best Paleteria in the world with high gourmet quality.”  What’s a paleteria?  Stop by and find out!

Arizona State University (ASU) and Universidad de Guadalajara have joined together to connect their respective film schools, beginning with a new agreement signed at ASU’s California Center on Broadway at 11th.

The Home and Garden Market drew 250 people to Wishbone Park on Sunday, May 18. It was a beautiful day in the park!
