420

‍ ‍ 4/20 is right around the corner. Dispensaries and smoke shops can be found in South Park to obtain the essentials for celebrating the holiday of cannabis culture.

April 20th, also known as 4/20 or 420, refers to the day dedicated to marijuana. Originating in the 1970s, in Marin County, California, a group of friends at San Rafael High School had a tradition to gather and smoke marijuana at 4:20pm. Their code was “420”. Later, one of the brothers of the friends helped him get work with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. The band is said to have helped popularize the term “420.” Then in 1990, a group of fans handed out flyers at a concert that invited people to smoke “420” on April 20 at 4:20 p.m. One ended up with Steve Bloom, a former reporter for High Times magazine. The magazine printed the flyer in 1991 and continued to reference the number. Soon, it became known worldwide as code for marijuana and April 20th as a holiday to the green community.
