Choice of Public Schools for South Park Residents,First in a Series
We see babies in strollers, parents with toddlers, and even a few school-age children around the neighborhood. What are the options for school-aged children in South Park? There are some private school options in the South Park area, which we will explore in the next series. But what are the options for public schools? Herewith we would like to share our initial findings.
Stop the Bleed Emergency Preparedness Offered
California Hospital, in South Park, is offering a Stop the Bleed training session for residents as part of a nationwide preparedness plan for disaster situations – earthquakes, shooters, and more. A person can bleed out within 5-minutes which can be before emergency help arrives. The 90-minute training will be held on Monday, September 19, from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at EVO – 1155 S. Grand (corner of Grand and 12th). The training is limited to 30 people. RSVPs are required at https://tinyurl.com/yckt9puk.
California Hospital Medical Center is a community hospital serving downtown and its neighboring communities for well over a century. Known for its wide range of medical services from obstetrics and gynecology to orthopedics and cardiology, the hospital also operates as a Level II Trauma Center, and its emergency department treats over 70,000 patients each year.
The Stop the Bleed training is hosted by South Park Neighborhood Association (SPNA).

LA Rams Home Open Watch Party at First Draft Brewery + Kitchen
SPNA and First Draft Brewery + Kitchen at the corner of Olive and Pico are hosting a Watch Party for the LA Rams Home Opener Game on Thursday, September 8 beginning at 5 pm. New Kobe Mural in South Park
Mamba Day featured the unveiling of the newest and largest mural of Kobe Bryant in L.A. at 1147 South Hope Street on the side of the West Coast Trial Lawyers building facing 12th Street. Mamba Day is the annual Kobe Bryant Day held on 8.24 which are Kobe’s 2 jersey numbers.
The center of the mural is Kobe, to his right is his daughter Gianna (Gigi) along with other children, and to the left is the black mamba snake. The mural was unveiled on Mamba Day, the annual Kobe Bryant Day.
The artists are world renown Odeith and LA based Nikkolas Smith. Branded Arts and West Coast Trial Lawyers held the mural unveiling on 8.24.
PINE & CRANE DTLA Soft Opening in South Park
The popular Taiwanese restaurant PINE & CRANE has officially opened their 2nd location in DTLA’s South Park, situated between South Park Commons and the Aven residential building.

Low Turn Out for Primary Election from South Park Residents
With 73% of the Primary Election counted, only 392 votes were cast in the South Park precinct. Elected officials listen to neighborhoods that vote. South Park residents need to vote in the November election in order to have their needs and problems addressed by those who represent South Park. Get ready to vote on November 8, 2022.
Transportation Solutions for a Safer, Cleaner, and more Welcoming LA Experience
Local and State leaders have recently enacted several initiatives that promise to make travel safer, cheaper, and cleaner for drivers, bikers, walkers, and transit riders.
California’s New Composting Law
All Californians – both individuals and businesses – are now required to separate food waste and “compostables” from their recyclables and garbage. The new regulation (AB 827) is being rolled out slowly, but by end of year 2024 the new law will have taken full effect. After that date, those violating the law will find themselves fined. Plan on adding a “compostables” container to your recyclable and garbage bins under your kitchen sink.

Movie Club in South Park begins this June
The South Park Neighborhood Association’s Second Sundays Movie Club begins Sunday, June 12, at 7:30 pm and will meet on the second Sunday of each month thereafter to view and discuss one of the movies recently chosen as the best of its year, beginning in 1932.

South Park residents are invited to a facilitated discussion regarding the June 7th Primary Election. The Salon-style format will be held on May 15 from 4:30 – 6:00 pm, hosted by the South Park Neighborhood Association (SPNA), and held at a convenient South Park location. The Salon is a gathering of neighbors who can ask questions, increase knowledge through a civil discussion, and listen to learn more about the June 7th Primary Election.
Transportation Updates
On March 31 I attended a Webinar hosted by MoveLA that described new transportation projects currently in the works including: a Gondola from Union Station to Dodger Stadium, a people mover at LAX, and a downtown streetcar. All hope to be operational by the 2028 Olympics. Upcoming State Transit Legislation. These bills promise to make South Park safer, quieter, and less polluted.
A 40-story Tower is Proposed for 1111 S. Hill
In a recent preliminary LA City design meeting, the final plan for a new 40-Story residential tower designed with a “California Redwoods theme” and named Sky Tree by Architect Sherwin Peneda MVD was presented. The project is slated to replace a mid-century warehouse located at the southwest corner of 11th and Hill Streets in the South Park neighborhood.
Cabra Los Angeles, a new rooftop restaurant opens at The Hoxton
Chef Stephanie Izard and the Boka Restaurant Group’s latest culinary delight is a Peruvian inspired drinking and eating establishment on top of The Hoxton Hotel, at 1060 South Broadway Avenue which opened in January 2020.
