New Year, New You

Join Us for The First Ever SPNA Community Cleanse

January is the month we all think about re-setting our lives. Some of us make lists of New Year’s Resolutions and some of us embark on a cleanse for the month. With the decadent eating (and drinking) that happens during the holidays, a cleanse during January is growing in popularity. With this in mind, the South Park Neighborhood Association, in partnership with California Hospital Dignity Health, has decided to launch a Community-wide cleanse for January. There will be many ways to gather as a community and support each other plus a slew of prizes for those that stay on cleanse the whole month.

How to Participate:

  1. Pick one of the popular cleanses from the list below.

  2. Register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/january-community-cleanse-new-year-new-you-tickets-786333062357 or use QR code below. Just send us a quick email to let us know you are interested and we will respond with more information.

  3. Get your baseline tests done (if you want to compete for the prizes). Baseline test results must be submitted by January 10th to be eligible for prizes.

  4. Join us for one or all of the many cleanse-related community events we have scheduled for the month.

  5. Win prizes for participating and getting measured results.

The Clean Program

Most cleanses will follow the same general principles. Healthy eating, no caffeine, no alcohol, no sugar, no processed foods. Each of the above has its nuances. Do your research, there are tons of videos about the cleanses and forums that discuss them. If you have a question, you can always reach out to us or those that created the cleanses.

Register

Register with us so we know that you are participating - just email us at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/january-community-cleanse-new-year-new-you-tickets-786333062357 . We will respond with more information. This will enable us to send you messages about the Community Cleanse gatherings that we will be doing a couple of times a week. One of the biggest challenges of a cleanse is the lack of social engagement (you aren’t dining out or socializing over drinks), our gatherings will solve for this.

Baseline Tests

Measurement equates to motivation (and we all need motivation to get through a cleanse). We have three benchmarks that we will monitor at the start of the cleanse at the end of the month. You can do all of these tests or do the ones you feel most comfortable with. These tests will be how we award prizes. Remember, this is your cleanse. Make it work for you.

  1. Body Mass Index: BMI is calculated by dividing one’s weight by height. Height doesn’t change during a cleanse but weight will. There will be a free BMI measurement session through our partners at DIgnity Health right here in South Park (Jan 3rd -details below).

  2. Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Also completed in partnership with Dignity Health, this is a pre-diabetic screening test to make you more aware of risks.

  3. Cholesterol LDL Blood Panel: Cholesterol is a silent killer that we rarely think about. A cleanse is a great way to see how healthy eating can have a dramatic effect on your LDL (bad cholesterol). For this test, you will need to have a cholesterol blood panel done at the beginning of the cleanse to establish your baseline and then once again at the end of the cleanse. You can book this with your doctor or pay out of pocket by going to Quest Diagnostics (they have locations in South Park).

Screening with California Hospital Dignity Health

California Hospital Dignity Health has generously offered to host a community screening day on January 3rd from 8am to 9am. They will do BMI and Glucose screening at no cost for anyone who signs up. You need to sign up to reserve your spot (space is limited to 50 participants). Register for health screenings (or their morning stretches for wellness) here. California Hospital is also offering several Zoom sessions to help make out January healthier, including: Minds Matter, The Mindful Eating Journey, The ABC’s of Heart Health, and The Gift of Gratitude.

Community Cleanse Events

Staying connected during cleanse will be key to staying o task (misery loves company as the old saying goes). We have a myriad of ways for you to engage with you fellow participants.

Neighborhood Walks: Join us and your fellow participants for a casual stroll through the neighborhood. Walks will take place every Tuesday morning at 9am and every Thursday evening at 6pm. The meeting place will always be South Park Commons (Wishbone Park) on Grand Ave (by Pine & Crane) but the walking route will change each time. Walks will be less than two miles and take under an hour. Dogs are welcome.

Morning Neighborhood Walk: Every Tuesday 9am

Evening Neighborhood Walk: Every Thursday 6pm.

Same meeting location place each time.

Different Route each time.

Healthy Zoom Sessions: California Hospital Dignity Health will host four Zoom sessions throughout the month with different themes. Zooms will always be at noon on Wednesday and last for 30 minutes. You can see the full schedule on their flyer and sign up for the sessions at any time during the cleanse. The first session is January 10th.

More events will be announced.

Win Prizes

Nothing motivates like some cool prizes. We have two categories and prizes for both males and females so there are four prizes on the line. Prizes are to be announced. Taking baseline tests before January 10th and submitting final test results by February 5th are the requirements to be eligible. Prize categories are as follows:

BMI -% Most Improved - Male

BMI -% Most Improved - Female

Cholesterol LDL Most Improved - Male

Cholesterol LDL Most Improved - Female

How To Submit Your Stats:

Send an email to spnadtla@gmail.com with a picture of your scale (with you on it). It needs to be time-stamped before January 10th. If you are competing for lowered LDL cholesterol, just send a copy of your initial blood test that notes your LDL (you can redact any information you wish). Your name should be visible.

Questions:

If you have questions, please email us at spnadtla@gmail.com. Once we launch the program, we will likely create a WhatsApp group just for the participants.
