Time to Vote March 5 Primary Election

        Ballots for the March 5 Primary Election will be mailed February 5. Are you registered to vote? If not, click Here and register before February 20. Is your mailing address up-to-date? if not click Here and re-register ASAP to receive your ballot in the mail.

         The primary ballot includes races ranging from national (presidential candidates) to local. For the top five LA and California races (City Council District 14, District Attorney, State Representative, US Representative, and US Senate) there are 56 candidates. Below is a list of who is running in those five races. Check back after February1for more information on the candidates in the top five races on the SPNA website – www.spna-dtla.org

Locally we are voting on who will represent us on the LA City Council for CD 14. Eight candidates are on the ballot – Genny Guerrero (Community Advocate/Mother), Teresa Y. Hillery (Attorney/Community Volunteer,), Ysabel Jurado (Tenant Rights Attorney), Wendy Carrillo (State Assemblywoman), Eduardo “Lalo” Vargus (Public School Teacher), Miguel Santiago (State Assemblymember/Parent), Kevin de León (LA Councilmember), Nadine Diaz (Health Professional, Advocate).           The LA County race  for District Attorney has 12 candidates – John McKinney (Supervising District Attorney), David S. Milton (Retired Judge), Maria Ramirez (Head Deputy District Attorney), George Gascon (Current District Attorney), Jonathan Hatami (Child Abuse Prosecutor), Eric Siddall (Violent Crime Prosecutor), Dan Kapelovitz (Criminal Defense Attorney), Nathan Hochman (Criminal Law Attorney), Craig J. Mitchell (Judge of the Superior Court), Jeff Chemerinsky (Assistant US Attorney), Lloyd “Bobcat” Masson (Cold Case Prosecutor), Debra Archuleta (Judge of the Superior Court LA County).

         Another local race is for State Representative for the 57th district which includes South Park with five candidates on the ballot – Dulce Vasquez (Educator, Advocate, Neighborhood Council, Democrat), Greg Akili (Labor, Community Organizer, Educator/nonprofit Director, Democrat), Sade Elhawary (Community Organizer, Educator, Democrat), Efren Martinez (Commissioner/Small Business Owner, Education, Community Advocate, Democrat), Tara Perry (Reparations Advocate, Political Influencer, Democrat).

         On the ballot for US House of Representatives for the 37th district including South Park are four candidates – Juan Rey (Metro train Mechanic, Union Steward, no party), Adam Carmichael (Businessman/Software Architect, US Navy veteran, Democrat), Sydney Kamlager-Dove (Current US Congresswoman for 37th district, previously in California State Assembly and Senate, Democrat), John Thompson Parker (Working Class Advocate, Coordinator of International Action Center and Freedom Party State Central Committee, Peace and Freedom Party).

Another race on the March 5 primary ballot is the US Senate with 27 candidates including front runners Adam Schiff (Current US House – Pasadena-West Hollywood-Echo Park area, Democrat), Barbara Lee (Current US House – northern California, Democrat),  Katie Porter (Current US House – Orange County, Democrat), and Steve Garvey (Former Padres and Dodgers player, Republican).

One ballot measure – Measure HLA – is on the primary ballot. HLA – Healthy Streets LA – would require the city to carry out the improvements in the approved Mobility Plan whenever city departments repave at least one-eighth of a mile of street. The listed improvements in the plan might be bike lanes, bus lanes, pedestrian enhancements, or fixes to ease vehicle traffic.

A lot to think about over the next month. Remember – more election and candidate information will be posted on the SPNA website – www.spna-dtla.org after February 1. Check it out and be an educated voter.
