Remembering Hygge and Dreads

Truly an iconic South Park fixture, Hygge Bakery & Café, and then under new ownership, Dreads Caribbean on Hope at 11th, was a charming place that had miraculously stood the test of time in a neighborhood where many businesses have come and gone. Now after a 16-year legacy, they’ve closed shop.

It was a humble place where you could always count on a hot cup of coffee and delicious breakfast, lunch, pastries, and more. DTLA office workers, visitors, and neighbors frequented the cafe every day. It was beloved by many, especially to those of us who have been around for a while. Their croissant + coffee breakfast special was part of my diet more than I care to admit and selfishly I miss the smell of freshly baked pastries in the Luma lobby every morning.

The original owner Mike was a friendly man with a charming sense of humor. I’d point to one of the Danishes in the display and ask for the “red one” (Raspberry? Strawberry? I still can’t remember). Mike would respond with, “One ‘red one’, coming right up!” He’d even help me practice my Korean and remembered my parents when they came into town. Due to some health concerns last year, Mike moved back to South Korea to be with family where his daughter has a cafe of her own. New ownership took over and Dreads Caribbean Cuisine was born. A Jamaican menu was added alongside the original Hygge menu and, although I can’t speak much to it, their meat pies were an enjoyable midday snack!

While they had a good run, unfortunately they closed in March. It’s no secret that the South Park retail market has been suffering recently. However, we’ve seen new establishments move in and eagerly look forward to more exciting additions coming soon. So, let’s do our best to support our existing local businesses and welcome the newcomers! We can only hope for lasting success and growth in South Park and DTLA.
