Designer Flip: Fernando Cuevas's Artistic Take on Interior Design

Meet Fernando Cuevas: an interior designer based in South Park and the founder of his own firm, Designer Flip, specializing in minimalist, modern spaces with an artistic touch. His work blends clean lines with natural materials and thoughtful details, resulting in interiors that feel both refined and inviting. From homes to commercial spaces across Los Angeles (not to mention a beautiful co-op in NYC!), Fernando has built a reputation for designs that are functional, personal, and visually striking. We caught up with him to learn more about his passions and business.

Tell us about your journey starting your firm and what the inspiration was behind it?

FC: My journey into interior design started humbly rearranging furniture and repainting the walls of my childhood home as a teenager. I formally studied Architecture and Interior Design in college, but when the 2007 market crash hit, I had to pivot into a career in fashion retail. However, my love for interiors never left me. After years of styling, side gigs, and apprenticing, I came back to my passion and established Designer Flip. The inspiration behind the firm came from my personal story—flipping limitations into opportunities and creating spaces that feel intentional, artistic, and livable. I wanted a studio that celebrated minimalist modern design while remaining soulful and grounded.

What’s your design philosophy or style?

FC: I’m drawn to minimalist modern design with an emphasis on organic textures, architectural forms, and clean lines. My style blends Brutalism and warmth -- pairing raw materials like concrete or wood with soft textures and curated arts. I strive to create spaces that are minimal, refined, yet comfortable. For me good design is about restraint, balance, and finding beauty in simplicity.

Do you work with homeowners in South Park? What types of services do you offer?

FC: I work with homeowners throughout Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

Designer Flip offers a range of interior design services -- from full-service residential and commercial design to furniture sourcing, space planning, and design consultations.

What’s one simple design tip you can share with neighbors looking to refresh their space?

FC: Start with texture and lighting. You don’t need to overhaul your whole space -- adding a cozy throw, new rug, or changing out your lighting fixtures can instantly shift the mood of a room. Think of how the space feels, not just how it looks. Small changes in tone, softness, and light can completely refresh your environment without breaking the bank.

Fernando is always open to new projects, consultations, and collaborations. To learn more about his work or to get in touch with him, visit his website or say hello if you see him around the neighborhood.
